New York City Platoon

Event overview

Hello Everyone!

We are back at it again with another project on our hands! Join the Bronx and Queens platoons as we join forces up in the Norwood area of The Bronx to help beautify the Museum of Bronx History at the Valentine-Varian House. Here is a bit of history below regarding the Valentine-Varian house:

The Valentine–Varian House is a historic house located in the Norwood neighborhood of the Bronx, New York City. Built-in 1758 by Isaac Valentine, it is the Bronx's second oldest house and oldest remaining farmhouse. The house remained in the Varian family, which included Isaac Varian, the 63rd Mayor of New York City until 1905 when it was sold. It is currently a part of the Historic House Trust and houses the Museum of Bronx History and the offices of the Bronx County Historical Society. It is a two-story, five-bay fieldstone residence with a gable roof. It was moved to its present site in 1965 and restored between July 1965 and May 1968.

Since the pandemic, the Valentine-Varian House, which is home to the Museum of Bronx History has been forgotten. Ideally, The Bronx County Historical Society would like to make the area a place where everyone in the Norwood area (and the Greater Bronx area), will have another place to visit, relax and possibly get more involved in the art spaces in the NYC area. With that being said, we have a couple of tasks that have been asked of us that need to get done, which are listed below:

1. Trimming the bushes back drastically.
2. Removing any dead bushes (and uproot).
3. Edging all pathways.
4. Removing tree limbs from pathway access and other areas as necessary.
5. Grass-cutting...We have an electric (large battery run-no cord) mower.
6. Raking.
7. Dig out a 1-foot wide by 1-foot deep trench dug around the perimeter of the south section of the grounds. That is the larger open-area opposite of the parking lot side. They plan on filling it with wood chips.

How to get there:
By Car - Enter Museum of Bronx History or 3266 Bainbridge Ave, The Bronx, NY, 10467
By Train - Take the D train to Norwood-205th Street OR take the 4 train to Mosholu Parkway. Keep an eye on MTA updates as Trains/Buses tend to be messed up on Weekends.
By Bus - Take the Bx16, Bx10, Bx28, Bx34, or Bx38 buses to Bainbridge Av/Reservoir Oval East (It'll drop you off in front of the Museum. Keep an eye on MTA updates as Trains/Buses tend to be messed up on Weekends.

Who We Are

The Mission Continues is a national non-profit that empowers veterans to continue serving in our nation’s under-resourced communities, giving veterans the opportunity to keep serving even after the uniform comes off, right here at home. Our programs deploy veterans and volunteers to work alongside nonprofit partners and community leaders to improve educational resources, tackle food insecurity, foster neighborhood identity, and more.

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.

What is a Service Platoon?

Service Platoons are your opportunity to engage and connect with veterans and community members while generating community impact in a real and tangible way. Led by veteran volunteer platoon leaders, each platoon works with dedicated community partners and volunteers to provide the manpower and support that they need to help them do their work more effectively.

We currently have service platoons in more than 40+ cities across the country that are having events at least once a month. Everyone is invited to serve, regardless of veteran status: a service platoon is for you if you have a passion for service.
