Event overview

Join the Chicago platoon as we kick off The Mission Continues' national service campaign, Operation Enduring Service, in memory of the 20th anniversary of September 11th.

We will be serving at two sites, Enlace La Calabazas Community Garden and Yollocalli. Both sites are located in Little Village.

We will be using Friday as our prep day to cut and prepare materials with the bulk of the work being completed on Saturday. Below is some background on the community partners and the tasks we will complete at both sites.

In 1990 a group of civic and community leaders in Little Village founded what was then called the Little Village Community Development Corporation ( LVCDC ). Their focus was to create a community driven process for the development of the abandoned industrial park at 26th and Kostner Avenue. During the process of engaging residents it became clear that there was a need for an organization committed to comprehensive community development across Little Village. In 2008 LVCDC was officially renamed Enlace focusing in four areas -education, health, immigration and violence prevention. Almost 10 years ago, Enlace opened its first community garden with the idea of creating spaces within La Villita that would not only provide an opportunity to interact with nature but also promote creativity and family unity.

TMC will be at Enlaces La Calabazas community garden helping to build garden beds, tables, benches and painting garden signs along with their corn house.

Yollocalli's mission is to strengthen the value of youth art and culture by providing equal access to communal, artistic, and cultural resources that allow youth to become creative and engaged community members. They provide programs for youth ages 13 to 24 years old, offered during the fall and spring after school, with longer day sessions during the summer. Programs range in technical skill and theme from basic drawing and painting, to public performance, blogging, comic and zine making, quinceañera aesthetics, mural painting and graffiti, just to name a few.

TMC will be helping build an archway entrance to the garden, benches, tables and a greenhouse. This will finalize our two year long work at this garden.
