Earth Day - Big Rock Beach

May 01, 2021

11:00 AM - 03:00 PM EDT

New York City Platoon

Event overview

Big Rock Beach used to be a vibrant place for the residents of the College Point area in northern Queens for fishing, swimming, marine biology classes, and etc. Over time, those who used to live there have either moved on or stopped coming to the beach, and the beach slowly became abandoned. Over the last couple of years the beach has been primarily used as a local dump site for trash and debris. At this time, the site has collected a large amount of trash. In addition, the stairway to the site has deteriorated over the years and is in need of a serious repair to provide a safe way to the waterfront. This is where we come into the picture. On May 1st, join us for our Earth Day project, as we plan to rebuild the stairway down to Big Rock Beach and help Coastal Prevention Network do a massive clean up of the area. We hope to preserve natural resources and the existing natural environment and, where possible, to repair damage and reverse trends. In addition, we hope to and increase the awareness of environmental protection and preservation. TMC NY are coming together to build a stairway and conduct a beach clean up as part of “Riverkeeper Sweep”, an annual day of service conducting 100+ beach cleanups in NYC and Westchester. Co-sponsored with A Better College Point Civic Association. Come join us at Big Rock Beach (119-6 28th Ave, Queens, NY 11354) on May 1st, 2021 at 11:00 am to help clean up this beach and improve community access to the beach area. Please make sure you register ahead of time for the event. You will be doing us a huge solid!

Who We Are

The Mission Continues is a national non-profit that empowers veterans to continue serving in our nation’s under-resourced communities, giving veterans the opportunity to keep serving even after the uniform comes off, right here at home. Our programs deploy veterans and volunteers to work alongside nonprofit partners and community leaders to improve educational resources, tackle food insecurity, foster neighborhood identity, and more.

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.

What is a Service Platoon?

Service Platoons are your opportunity to engage and connect with veterans and community members while generating community impact in a real and tangible way. Led by veteran volunteer platoon leaders, each platoon works with dedicated community partners and volunteers to provide the manpower and support that they need to help them do their work more effectively.

We currently have service platoons in more than 40+ cities across the country that are having events at least once a month. Everyone is invited to serve, regardless of veteran status: a service platoon is for you if you have a passion for service.
