Event overview

Background Farwell-Roosevelt VFW Post 2713 The VFW traces its roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service: Many arrived home wounded or sick. There was no medical care or veterans’ pension for them, and they were left to care for themselves. In their misery, some of these veterans banded together and formed organizations with what would become known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. After chapters were formed in Ohio, Colorado, and Pennsylvania, the movement quickly gained momentum. By 1915, membership grew to 5,000; by 1936, membership was almost 200,000. Since then, the VFW’s voice had been instrumental in establishing the Veterans Administration, creating a GI bill for the 20th century, the development of the national cemetery system and the fight for compensation for Vietnam vets exposed to Agent Orange and for veterans diagnosed with Gulf War Syndrome. In 2008, VFW won a long-fought victory with the passing of a GI Bill for the 21st Century, giving expanded educational benefits to America’s active-duty service members, and members of the Guard and Reserves, fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Farwell-Roosevelt VFW Post 2713 is unique, first in its name, combining Colonel Farwell and one of our President, Theodore Roosevelt. Secondly and more importantly, the hall is extremely unique in that it has been made available to the public, with existing active programs benefitting the West Seattle and adjacent communities, such as Carry the Message AA meeting, dance troop, Fit4Mom, Underground Theather, Rope Works, Celtic Arts NW, Au-Lac Vovinam, etc. With the support of CarMax and the Seattle Seahawks, we are going to give the Farwell-Roosevelt Veterans of Foreign War 2713 (West Seattle) a much appreciated indoor renovation project. The objectives are: 1. Removal of the bar stand 2. Remodel/rebuild the bar stand 3. Building indoor shelving system of the main office and Sound-system office 4. Mounting wall mirrors 5. Mounting ladies restroom mirrors 6. Clean and wash interior and exterior windows 7. Replacing main stage drapes 8. Removing/clearing weeds in the upper parking area and around the building Check-in will begin at 10:30 and programs will promptly follow at 11 am or shortly thereafter. Please arrive on time (meaning at least 5 minutes early). A hard stop will be at 2 pm. Are you in? Register if you are!
