2023 MLK Jr. Day National Vega Baja

February 01, 2023

09:00 AM - 02:00 PM AST

Puerto Rico Platoon

Event overview

To mark the Martin Luther King Jr (MLK) National Day of Service we salute those who fought and continue to fight to improve their communities both in and out of Uniform. We continue to serve because there is still work to be done and our veterans are uniquely suited to affect positive change. That is why we invite you to our Legacy Service Champaign on MLK at Kira's Exotic Mini Zoo in Vega Baja. As part of their mission and intent to serve in a positive way in this community, they were recently donated a 20x20 wooden structure next to the property to be able impact with clinics, classes & therapy for children that fit the Autism spectrum, ADHD within others with specialist. That is why The Mission Continues Puerto Rico Platoon will be impacting this MLK weekend to construct a cement pavement needed from the zoo grounds to the Wooden structure that they have to give children their therapies or classes. As well we will be putting in the wooden windows carefully handmade by our volunteers from the Wounded Warrior Project. Here a little more on the Mini Zoo. As with any island, importation of exotic animals into Puerto Rico needs to be controlled to prevent the disruption and displacement of native wildlife. The Department of Environmental and Natural Resources (the DRNA or Department of Natural Resources) is tasked with regulating the importation of exotic and foreign animals into the island. If the DRNA finds someone importing animals, or keeping animals without the required permits, the animals are confiscated. If there is nowhere to safely house the animals, they can be killed for everyone’s safety. This is where Kira’s World Exotic Mini Zoo comes in. They work with the DRNA to house and keep these animals safely out of the wild of Puerto Rico. They also rescue some sick or injured local pets and animals and give them the care they need to have better lives. They offer tours of their facilities to teach people about the animals, the importance of not taking animals out of the wild, and proper care of animals. These animals really were blessed to find this second chance at life at Kiras Mini Zoo. They have about 100 animals in their care. They have many exotic birds, and their colors are bright and beautiful. They also have lemurs, wallaby, ant eater, bobcat, zebra and a donkey, just to name a few. Education is the key to saving our planet and that is something Kiras Mini Zoo holds dear to its heart when they open their doors to the community.

Who We Are

The Mission Continues is a national non-profit that empowers veterans to continue serving in our nation’s under-resourced communities, giving veterans the opportunity to keep serving even after the uniform comes off, right here at home. Our programs deploy veterans and volunteers to work alongside nonprofit partners and community leaders to improve educational resources, tackle food insecurity, foster neighborhood identity, and more.

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.

What is a Service Platoon?

Service Platoons are your opportunity to engage and connect with veterans and community members while generating community impact in a real and tangible way. Led by veteran volunteer platoon leaders, each platoon works with dedicated community partners and volunteers to provide the manpower and support that they need to help them do their work more effectively.

We currently have service platoons in more than 40+ cities across the country that are having events at least once a month. Everyone is invited to serve, regardless of veteran status: a service platoon is for you if you have a passion for service.
