OCS Day 3- Englewood Veterans Garden & Hermitage Community Garden

August 14, 2022

07:30 AM - 04:00 PM CDT

Chicago Platoon

Event overview

About Mass Deployment: Our Mass Deployment program is a team-based event that mobilizes veterans alongside local partners and volunteers in a single city for a week of community impact. This year, we have selected Chicago as the host for the program named Operation Chi-Town Salute. Through four days of large-scale service projects we aim to engage 85+ veterans from across the United States, engage 100+ local Chicago-area veterans, complete 60+ projects at five nonprofit partner locations, engage 200+ community members to serve alongside our veterans, and contribute $200,000 worth of community service impact to Chicago.

Day 3 will be spent serving two partners in the heart of Englewood: Hermitage Street Community Garden and the Englewood Veterans Garden. The Hermitage Street Community Garden provides opportunities for residents to learn about gardening and harvest fresh food, where all excess produce is donated to area senior centers in an amount of up 10,000 pounds. Across the street, the Englewood Veterans Garden serves as a space in Chicago specifically created and designed for veterans and their families; 100% of the clients it serves are veterans, family members or caregivers.

Together with our partners, we will spend the day serving to:
Install roofing on the existing pergolas
Build new garden beds
Build a tool shed
Construct a greenhouse to help extend the growing season
Level and lay pavers under the main pergola
Upgrade the kids play area to give them a designed place to play

Registration is from 8:30am-9:00am. We will begin the project at 9:00am.

Who We Are

The Mission Continues is a national non-profit that empowers veterans to continue serving in our nation’s under-resourced communities, giving veterans the opportunity to keep serving even after the uniform comes off, right here at home. Our programs deploy veterans and volunteers to work alongside nonprofit partners and community leaders to improve educational resources, tackle food insecurity, foster neighborhood identity, and more.

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.

What is a Service Platoon?

Service Platoons are your opportunity to engage and connect with veterans and community members while generating community impact in a real and tangible way. Led by veteran volunteer platoon leaders, each platoon works with dedicated community partners and volunteers to provide the manpower and support that they need to help them do their work more effectively.

We currently have service platoons in more than 40+ cities across the country that are having events at least once a month. Everyone is invited to serve, regardless of veteran status: a service platoon is for you if you have a passion for service.
