Operation Motown Muster Day 4: Project Resilient

June 28, 2016

09:00 AM - 04:00 PM EDT

National Events Platoon

Event overview

At the heart of the Chadsey Condon neighborhood in Southwest Detroit, Priest Elementary serves 776 children and families of this truly diverse cross-section of the city. The neighborhood is home to 28,261 individuals, 10,472 of which are youth age 0-18. Youth constitute 37.1 % of the community. Many aspects of Chadsey Condon make it special, including its ethnic diversity—representing backgrounds of Latino, African American, Arabic, and Eastern European—and the unique trend of growing households and high civic involvement. Its unique characteristics create unique challenges. While Chadsey Condon experiences lower crime rates on the whole compared to other parts of Detroit, the number of vacancies increased by half in a decade, which is tied to public safety concerns especially in a neighborhood where a majority of children walk to school daily. Additionally, with very few other community assets in the immediate area, families look to Priest to provide a safe and inviting venue to gather with their neighbors and children. - Repair a portion of blacktop and create games such as four-square, tether ball, hopscotch, painted map, a meditation maze, etc. - Create soccer field to include marking off lines, establish goals and build benches on sidelines - Create a walking/bike lane for safe passage - Front of building needs benches, picnic tables, gathering space for families, landscaping, and tree removal. - The Earthship outdoor classroom could use repairs, new mulch, planting and landscaping - Give a face lift to the side entrance with planters, landscaping, and a mural - New mulch for the existing playground and installation of a low barrier to contain the mulch - Install a playground or skate park for the older kids - Neighborhood clean-up and board-up

Who We Are

The Mission Continues is a national non-profit that empowers veterans to continue serving in our nation’s under-resourced communities, giving veterans the opportunity to keep serving even after the uniform comes off, right here at home. Our programs deploy veterans and volunteers to work alongside nonprofit partners and community leaders to improve educational resources, tackle food insecurity, foster neighborhood identity, and more.

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.

What is a Service Platoon?

Service Platoons are your opportunity to engage and connect with veterans and community members while generating community impact in a real and tangible way. Led by veteran volunteer platoon leaders, each platoon works with dedicated community partners and volunteers to provide the manpower and support that they need to help them do their work more effectively.

We currently have service platoons in more than 40+ cities across the country that are having events at least once a month. Everyone is invited to serve, regardless of veteran status: a service platoon is for you if you have a passion for service.
