Puerto Rico Platoon

Event overview

In 2005, Puerto Rico made a real dream come true for a young Puerto Rican woman named Rosimar Hernandez and others like her. Rosimar's dream was to see accessible beach access become a reality on the beaches of Puerto Rico. Thanks to the work of the Governor of Puerto Rico and a special interagency committee was created to make this unique resource possible for residents and tourists alike. However, in 2017 when Hurricane Irma and Maria passed thru the island this dream was put to the wayside. Now, in 2021 Rosimar (at the age 41) dreams of not die without seeing accessibility for all people on the beaches of Puerto Rico. For this reason, The Mission Continues will be collaborating with SER de Puerto Rico (Society of Education and Rehabilitation in Puerto Rico), a non-profit agencies providing vocational rehabilitation and other services to individuals with disabilities, as well as the Foundations of Puerto Rico and local community leaders to revitalize and re-inaugurate the public beach at Monserrate in Luquillo, Puerto Rico East known as Mar Sin Barreras" / "Ocean without Barriers". Currently, different funding agents have provided for 3 specialized amphibious chairs, a mat to facilitate transfer to the water, and paint. In order for the this incredible re-inauguration to occur on 31 July 2021, we will be painting the facility, parking lot and beach entrance. Additional Needs and Requests: If you know anyone that can volunteer their services, the adaptive bathrooms are in need of revision of plumbing, paint, and installation of (door locks, faucets). They are currently looking for donations for panels and equipment or materials for ceiling sealer, so that the bathrooms are safe for those in wheelchairs users at the location. Who We Are

The Mission Continues is a national non-profit that empowers veterans to continue serving in our nation’s under-resourced communities, giving veterans the opportunity to keep serving even after the uniform comes off, right here at home. Our programs deploy veterans and volunteers to work alongside nonprofit partners and community leaders to improve educational resources, tackle food insecurity, foster neighborhood identity, and more.

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.

What is a Service Platoon?

Service Platoons are your opportunity to engage and connect with veterans and community members while generating community impact in a real and tangible way. Led by veteran volunteer platoon leaders, each platoon works with dedicated community partners and volunteers to provide the manpower and support that they need to help them do their work more effectively.

We currently have service platoons in more than 40+ cities across the country that are having events at least once a month. Everyone is invited to serve, regardless of veteran status: a service platoon is for you if you have a passion for service.
