Rebuilding a Healthy Neighborhood

May 05, 2018

08:00 AM - 03:00 PM EDT

Columbus OH Platoon

Event overview

Join us (and several hundred other volunteers!!) as we support the 29th year of Rebuilding a Healthy Neighborhood, the flagship event for Rebuilding Together Central Ohio! This event provides critical home repairs, modifications and improvements for low-income homeowners and their communities. For 2018, the event will take place in the Little Farms addition to the Prairie Township Addition. The project this year has extra special meaning for The Mission Continues because we have the opportunity to help out a World War II veteran, Stan Griggs. Sgt Griggs served in the Merchant Marines in 1943 before joining the Army Medical Corps and the Engineering Corps and serving in the Pacific from 1944-1946. When he returned home, Stan served as a minister in the Warrensburg United Methodist Church and at Troy Chapel before going to college at Ohio Wesleyan in 1954 and becoming a teacher. He then taught elementary school from 1958 until 1981 when he retired. The house we will be working on is the same home where his wife was born in 1927. The project for the day includes adding a handrail to the basement stairway, painting the front porch, adding tread to the basement steps, rebuilding the grape arbor and other small yard projects. All volunteers must also register at: https://rtcentraloh.civicore.com/index.php?action=userLogin&ret=action%3DhomePage. To register, fill out a new volunteer application found on the left side of the page. Under, "Group", choose your corresponding sponsor name (“2018 The Mission Continues”) NOTE: Minors should be at least 14 years old to volunteer. Any additional questions can also be directed to Caroline Beachy (Rebuilding Together Central Ohio) at 614-258-6392.

Who We Are

The Mission Continues is a national non-profit that empowers veterans to continue serving in our nation’s under-resourced communities, giving veterans the opportunity to keep serving even after the uniform comes off, right here at home. Our programs deploy veterans and volunteers to work alongside nonprofit partners and community leaders to improve educational resources, tackle food insecurity, foster neighborhood identity, and more.

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.

What is a Service Platoon?

Service Platoons are your opportunity to engage and connect with veterans and community members while generating community impact in a real and tangible way. Led by veteran volunteer platoon leaders, each platoon works with dedicated community partners and volunteers to provide the manpower and support that they need to help them do their work more effectively.

We currently have service platoons in more than 40+ cities across the country that are having events at least once a month. Everyone is invited to serve, regardless of veteran status: a service platoon is for you if you have a passion for service.
