Pittsburgh Platoon

Event overview

//*********************** Short Notice, New Initiative *******************************// This weekend, 2nd platoon will be conducting a first-of-its-kind operation in Homewood. We will be loading up rucks with whatever tools we can carry, and commencing patrol block by block, looking for residents in need of minor household repairs or work they are unable to take on. It might be changing a tire, fixing a leak, repairing a broken lock or window, or a busted handrail. If we have the tools to fix it, we handle it on the spot. If it exceeds the scope our load-out can handle, we will record the job and work to schedule it as a support project. Our strategic focus will consist of four primary elements: listen to the residents, learn about them and the neighborhood, help them fix a problem they haven't been able to address, and if applicable, teach them how to do the work next time. Because we are a veteran organization, I consider it my solemn duty to give such a mission profile a suitably unnecessary acronym that both captures the focus and describes the intent: LLFT Patrols (Listen, Learn, Fix, Teach). Pronounced "lift", as in we are working to lift each other and the neighborhood up. That should fit nicely on a PowerPoint Slide. As such: NLT 1000, 2nd Platoon will conduct a LLFT Patrol, originating at the offices of Operation Better Block, and move to the designated zone of coverage. All forces will cease patrol operations NLT 1500, converging on the OBB offices for AAR. For civilian operators: We're meeting at 10 in front of Operation Better Block, walking the neighborhood for a couple hours, and then moving back to the start point to pack up and conduct a critique of what we've done. The aim is to be done by 3 pm. Depending on the success of the operation, we will begin conducting these patrols on a regular basis, but you don't want to miss out on the first one. As always, if you need accommodations, or a ride, let me know and we'll take care of you. See you out there.

Who We Are

The Mission Continues is a national non-profit that empowers veterans to continue serving in our nation’s under-resourced communities, giving veterans the opportunity to keep serving even after the uniform comes off, right here at home. Our programs deploy veterans and volunteers to work alongside nonprofit partners and community leaders to improve educational resources, tackle food insecurity, foster neighborhood identity, and more.

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.

What is a Service Platoon?

Service Platoons are your opportunity to engage and connect with veterans and community members while generating community impact in a real and tangible way. Led by veteran volunteer platoon leaders, each platoon works with dedicated community partners and volunteers to provide the manpower and support that they need to help them do their work more effectively.

We currently have service platoons in more than 40+ cities across the country that are having events at least once a month. Everyone is invited to serve, regardless of veteran status: a service platoon is for you if you have a passion for service.
