Event overview

Operation: Dig Dug About Rainier Beach Urban Farm & Wetlands: Rainier Beach Urban Farm & Wetlands (RBUFW) was formerly a Seattle Parks nursery. The City of Seattle contracted with Seattle Tilth and the Friends of Rainier Beach Urban Farm & Wetlands in 2011 to coordinate the transformation of the site into a community education center that supports a natural wetlands and organic food production. At RBUFW in 2014, Seattle Tilth engaged more than 500 volunteers, offered more than 17,000 hours of educational programs reaching 3,500 community members, and grew 10,000 pounds of food that was distributed to the community and sold as part of our social enterprise. About Seattle Tilth: Founded in 1978, Seattle Tilth is a nationally recognized nonprofit educational organization that inspires and educates people to safeguard our natural resources while building an equitable and sustainable local food system. We offer classes and hands-on training in sustainable urban agriculture and environmental stewardship for all ages. Learn more at www.seattletilth.org. What to Expect: Service days on the farm are fun, family-friendly events! Opportunities for work and learning for your group include both organic farm production and ecological restoration of the wetlands. Sample farm tasks include preparing planting beds, planting, watering, weeding, harvesting, and composting, as well as caring for the small livestock on the farm – chickens, bees, fish, and red wiggler worms. Wetland work includes removing invasive weeds, planting wetland trees and shrubs and sheet mulching to protect them.

Who We Are

The Mission Continues is a national non-profit that empowers veterans to continue serving in our nation’s under-resourced communities, giving veterans the opportunity to keep serving even after the uniform comes off, right here at home. Our programs deploy veterans and volunteers to work alongside nonprofit partners and community leaders to improve educational resources, tackle food insecurity, foster neighborhood identity, and more.

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.

What is a Service Platoon?

Service Platoons are your opportunity to engage and connect with veterans and community members while generating community impact in a real and tangible way. Led by veteran volunteer platoon leaders, each platoon works with dedicated community partners and volunteers to provide the manpower and support that they need to help them do their work more effectively.

We currently have service platoons in more than 40+ cities across the country that are having events at least once a month. Everyone is invited to serve, regardless of veteran status: a service platoon is for you if you have a passion for service.
