AZ State Veterans Home Project

Phoenix Platoon

Event overview

Join The Mission Continues, 2nd Platoon Phoenix & WWP Alumni helping our fellow comrades at the AZ State Veteran Home (ASVH), where we will be conducting a revitalization project to improve the lives of its residents. The AZ State Veteran Home is a 200 bed Medicare certified skilled nursing facility serving the long term care and rehabilitative needs of the veterans of Arizona. Many of the residents are Vietnam, World War II & Korean War era veterans. Together we will demo and prepare a new library, refurbish the gazebo utilized by veterans with dementia, restain outdoor tables & chairs, work in the garden/greenhouse area, conduct much needed landscaping work, assist residents in a special art therapy painting session to create artworks for their rooms and more! Big thanks to the ASVH for providing lunch for our volunteers. We will be serving in the honor and memory of our fallen Platoon member, Brian Smith (US Army Retired). The ASVH was a very special place for Brian, where he dedicated many hours of personal service. Brian was a very active member of our Platoon, WWP Peer Mentor and Team Rubicon member who will be sorely missed in our community. Big thanks to WWP for generously supporting this project and helping us engage our local veterans in civic action. This project is suitable for youth aged 10 and up under parental supervision. Important: Some GPS do not register the listed address on S Herrera Way. The address 4141 N 3rd St also works. ASVH is located within the Phoenix VA Hospital Complex, wedged north of the hospital and south of Steele Indian School Park. Please review location and map prior to project day.

Who We Are

The Mission Continues is a national non-profit that empowers veterans to continue serving in our nation’s under-resourced communities, giving veterans the opportunity to keep serving even after the uniform comes off, right here at home. Our programs deploy veterans and volunteers to work alongside nonprofit partners and community leaders to improve educational resources, tackle food insecurity, foster neighborhood identity, and more.

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.

What is a Service Platoon?

Service Platoons are your opportunity to engage and connect with veterans and community members while generating community impact in a real and tangible way. Led by veteran volunteer platoon leaders, each platoon works with dedicated community partners and volunteers to provide the manpower and support that they need to help them do their work more effectively.

We currently have service platoons in more than 40+ cities across the country that are having events at least once a month. Everyone is invited to serve, regardless of veteran status: a service platoon is for you if you have a passion for service.
