Located in New York City, Harlem is a historic neighborhood with roots ranging back to the early 1600s. It is a community that is rich in culture and character. Over the years, the neighborhood has suffered from many social issues that have proved to be detrimental to the community such as the highest jobless rate in New York City, teenage pregnancy, AIDS, drug abuse, and homelessness. In addition to those issues, East Harlem has the second highest concentration of public housing in the United States, lack of access to fresh food, and an asthma rate five times the national average.
To help address some of the issues Harlem is facing, The Mission Continues Harlem Platoon is working with Harlem Grown, Mosaic Preparatory School, and Wagner houses. The Harlem Platoon is working with these partner organizations to re-imagine and reinvent spaces and places in Harlem to strengthen connection between the people and places they share to support an evolution of what the community is known for.
