Kansas City Kansas Public Schools faces many of the same challenges as urban core school districts across the country. More specifically, Northeast Kansas City – the region where this Operation is focused - has contended with high unemployment, lack of access to medical resources, affordable housing, and lack of access to fresh food. All these challenges affect the ability of children to succeed at school. For example, from 2001-2011, public schools in the Midwest experienced 40% growth in the number of low-income students but an increase of only 12% growth in per student spending.

Our partner school for this operation, Banneker Elementary, serves a school community where 97% of students come from low-income families and 37% of students are English-language learners. This school is the front line of the fight to reduce educational inequality and prepare students for success later in life. The school has a strong vision for students:

“Banneker Elementary School will prepare our students for the 21st Century by developing skills of problem-solving, research and critical thinking. Our goals of student achievement and success will be supported by a positive, encouraging learning community.”

Kansas City 1st Platoon’s activities will support Banneker Elementary in reaching its goal by creating a more vibrant learning community with new instruction opportunities (e.g. outdoor classrooms, reading lofts) to support one of the schools driving priorities, converting classroom lessons to classroom experiences, while also supporting priorities around academic achievement and parent participation.
