Founded in 2004, KIPP Indy Public Schools, a college-prep public charter is located in the Martindale-Brightwood community on the northeast side of Indianapolis. A once thriving and prominent industrial hub, Martindale-Brightwood community members now face many challenges. The childhood poverty rate is higher in the Martindale-Brightwood community, at 55.6%, compared to the state average of 45%, while 12.8% of children in the area live in single-parent households. Additionally, the community experiences one of the highest high school dropout rates in the area, at above 50%. These factors point to the crucial need for the positive adult presence in the lives of the community’s youth.

KIPP Indy Public Schools (KIPP Indy) was founded with one class of fifth grade students and has grown to educate over 600 students across two schools. The building that KIPP first moved into was an old high school building leased from Indianapolis Public School District, but was not suitable for younger children at the time they moved in, which provides ample opportunities to create impact by helping to make the learning environment more safe and welcoming. As part of the plan to open a total of 5 schools by 2021 serving at least 2,500 students annually, KIPP Indianapolis will be opening a high school in the fall of 2019.

Indianapolis 1st Service Platoon supports KIPP Indy Unite by providing resources to create a safe and positive learning environment for students, a welcoming space for families, and additional support and capacity to staff as they seek to meet objectives. These activities contribute to the school’s goals for enrollment and college prep and access for students. Beyond providing physical improvements such as mulching the playground, planting a fruit orchard and building raised garden beds for the school’s nutrition program, Indianapolis 1st Platoon members are integrated members of the school community as recurring volunteers to support the school, including weekly administrative support in the front office and helping staff family monthly events such as movie nights. Platoon Leadership Team members serve on the KIPP Indy Unite Community Advisory Board, a monthly convening of key community partners, to stay up to date on the priorities of the school and continuously seek opportunities to support the school’s goals.
