Founded in 2004, KIPP Indy Unite is located in a community that is in dire need of a beacon of light. Located in the Martindale (Brightwood) community, the neighborhood is one of the most educationally underserved in the United States, with some of the highest rates of poverty and crime and lowest rates of educational attainment in Indiana. With 95% of their students participating in the free/reduced lunch program, the students who attend the school face many challenges. Founded in 2014, the school opened in an abandoned middle/high school building, and currently serves nearly 400 Kindergarten and 1st grade students.

Before this year, the school did not appear to be an inspiring learning environment for younger students, without as much as a swing set outside. With the help of Indianapolis 1st platoon members and 100s of other volunteers, a playground was built for the students over the summer. On Veterans Day, Indy 1st Platoon built raised garden beds for the future community garden and helped plant an orchard alongside youth volunteers. Join Indianapolis 1st Platoon as it continues its mission to brighten the lives of students at KIPP Indy Unite!
