Highland Park Veteran's Square Beautification

August 24, 2019

08:00 AM - 11:00 AM PDT

Los Angeles Platoon

Event overview

We are partnering with LA CITY Council District 1, the Historic Highland Park Neighborhood Council, and the Arroyo Seco Neighborhood Council, to beautify the Veteran's Square Memorial in Highland Park (at the corner of York Blvd & Figueroa St) Location: 6218, York Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90042. We will be weeding, planting a few trees, picking up trash, sweeping, etc. This will be in celebration of the new fountain that is being built in the square. We will be providing light refreshments and all of the tools/materials needed. I am reaching out to invite you to attend this event! The Audubon Center’s mission is to inspire people to experience, understand and care for the local natural world. The nature-based education and community programs at Debs Park are designed to engage children and their families in the outdoor world, and to give them a personal stake in its protection by making environmental issues relevant to their lives. The Center is operated by Audubon California, a state field program of National Audubon Society, and is a vital part of Audubon’s national outreach initiative to engage Latino audiences. The Center, which is surrounded by predominately Latino neighborhoods, is a unique gathering place and dynamic focal point for outdoor recreation, environmental education and conservation action.

Who We Are

The Mission Continues is a national non-profit that empowers veterans to continue serving in our nation’s under-resourced communities, giving veterans the opportunity to keep serving even after the uniform comes off, right here at home. Our programs deploy veterans and volunteers to work alongside nonprofit partners and community leaders to improve educational resources, tackle food insecurity, foster neighborhood identity, and more.

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.

What is a Service Platoon?

Service Platoons are your opportunity to engage and connect with veterans and community members while generating community impact in a real and tangible way. Led by veteran volunteer platoon leaders, each platoon works with dedicated community partners and volunteers to provide the manpower and support that they need to help them do their work more effectively.

We currently have service platoons in more than 40+ cities across the country that are having events at least once a month. Everyone is invited to serve, regardless of veteran status: a service platoon is for you if you have a passion for service.
