Event overview

Join Detroit 2nd Platoon for Earth Day in Detroit! This annual celebration of Earth Day is our season kick off for a summer of combating blight, improving green spaces, and working toward are more sustainable Detroit for all. The Mission Continues along with partners from Comcast, City Year Detroit, and more, are teaming up to continue the ongoing process of neighborhood stabilization and revitalization through the creation of vibrant and sustainable community spaces. Over the course of the day, the veteran-led volunteers will: • Address rainwater run off through the creation of “irrigation stations,” new green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) for the community garden. • Build a new deck for at the residence of a community member and keeper of the community gardens. • Create outdoor spaces for community members to convene, by constructing benches, picnic tables, and a shade structure. • Spring planting in the gardens at Veterans Village, and more! Volunteers should meet at the Motor City Blight Busters storefront next to Motor City Java House for registration and a light breakfast at 7:30 am. The project will kick off promptly at 8 am. Lunch will be provided at the conclusion of the project.

What To Wear

This project will take place outdoors so please prepare for possible weather changes! Dress in layers. Closed toe shoes are required, and heavy duty boots are recommended.

What to Bring

Bring a reusable water bottle, rain gear, a can-do attitude, and a friend.

Inclement Weather

Please monitor emails for updates should cancellation be necessary. We will plan to work rain or shine, however, in the most extreme case we will set Saturday, May 11, as a rain date.

Parking is available in the parking lot next to Old Redford Theatre. Please meet at the Motor City Blight Busters storefront next to Motor City Java House.
