MLK Day of Service: Revamping the Horseshoe Pit at Karl Ross

January 24, 2026

09:00 AM - 03:00 PM PST

Bay Area Platoon

Event overview

Join us this MLK Day of Service as we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy through meaningful action and community impact. The Mission Continues will lead volunteers in revamping the horseshoe pit at the American Legion Karl Ross Post 16, transforming it into a clean, safe, and welcoming recreational space for veterans and their families. As part of this project, volunteers will clear debris, level the playing area, refresh the sand, and enhance the surrounding landscape. We will also lay new ground cover bark to improve the appearance and functionality of the outdoor space, and install permanent park benches to provide comfortable seating for veterans and visitors. In addition to the outdoor upgrades, we will refresh the back patio by installing new lighting and ceiling fans, and applying a fresh coat of paint to create a brighter, more comfortable environment for gatherings and community events. By participating, volunteers help strengthen community spaces, support the well-being of local veterans, and embody Dr. King’s message of service, unity, and collective responsibility. This hands-on project reflects our commitment to building stronger communities through veteran-led service. Serve with us. Honor the legacy. Make an impact.

Who We Are

In 2025, Travis Manion Foundation (TMF) acquired The Mission Continues, bringing two best-in-class organizations together to provide more opportunities for veterans to find community, lead, and serve. Guided by the ethos “If Not Me, Then Who…,” veterans continue their service, build connections, and thrive in their post-military lives by serving as character role models to youth. As a result, communities prosper and the character of our nation’s heroes lives on in the next generation. Learn more about TMF at travismanion.org

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.
