Doris Miller American Legion Post 213 - Prep Day

November 10, 2023

11:00 AM - 03:00 PM EST

New York City Platoon

Event overview

This upcoming Veteran's Day weekend, join the TMC NYC platoons as we are commemorating Veterans Day 2023 with a Service Project back in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

We're Partnering alongside our Veteran Service Org Partner, The American Legion. The Park Slope Armory hosts the Dorie Miller AL Post 213, which supports Veterans from the surrounding Park Slope & Sunset Park Communities. If you want to know more about this post, feel free to check out the links below.

We'll continue the good work with our Beautification Service Project, which includes BOTH Indoor & Outdoor Tasks. The tasks that we will be focusing on are below:

1. Painting a Military History Suite, which in the future will be turned into a small museum.

2. Help archive, box, and scan documents from the fabled US Army All-Black 369th Infantry Regiment from WWI & WWII. This will not only help the legion create more space for other events and opportunities, but it will help make conserving the history of the regiment a lot easier to manage.

3. Build a Designated Veteran's Garden for the Older Veterans who are part of the Legion and surrounding community to Enjoy. This will allow the Legion to utilize the green space out front to the fullest to conduct future events and opportunities for years to come.

4. Trash pick up and sweeping as needed around the Legion.

This event will happen rain or shine. Families are welcome and we’ll have something for everyone. Breakfast and Lunch will also be provided, so you're not going to go home hungry and if you do, we failed you.

Please consider attending our Veteran Day's event to ensure Park Slope Armory is a more inviting venue for family, friends, and children from the surrounding communities to partake in this historic landmark.

Thank you for taking the time to read our message on joining us for this ongoing project since our MLK Jr. Day of Service in January. We hope to see you there!

Who We Are

The Mission Continues is a national non-profit that empowers veterans to continue serving in our nation’s under-resourced communities, giving veterans the opportunity to keep serving even after the uniform comes off, right here at home. Our programs deploy veterans and volunteers to work alongside nonprofit partners and community leaders to improve educational resources, tackle food insecurity, foster neighborhood identity, and more.

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.

What is a Service Platoon?

Service Platoons are your opportunity to engage and connect with veterans and community members while generating community impact in a real and tangible way. Led by veteran volunteer platoon leaders, each platoon works with dedicated community partners and volunteers to provide the manpower and support that they need to help them do their work more effectively.

We currently have service platoons in more than 40+ cities across the country that are having events at least once a month. Everyone is invited to serve, regardless of veteran status: a service platoon is for you if you have a passion for service.
