Operation Enduring Service: Los Angeles

August 28, 2021

09:00 AM - 02:00 PM PDT

Los Angeles Platoon

Event overview

Veterans continue to lead the way in serving their country and their community, especially after hanging up their uniforms. Come out this August 28th to serve with the Los Angeles Platoon in South Central as we mark the 20th year anniversary of 9/11 - a day that impacted veterans, first responders, and the world.

The Mission Continues has launched Beyond 9/11: Operation Enduring Service - a campaign celebrating the service of veterans who were inspired to serve their country after the tragic events of September 11th, and highlights kicking off the next 20 years of a veteran-led service in our country.

On this August day of service, our platoon will be hosting a service project meant to not only give back to South Central LA, but to invest in the youngest members of our community. Our platoon will be at the Wanda A. Mikes Early Education Center which serves as a childcare/development center for the youth of Los Angeles.

The Wanda A. Mikes Early Education Center is a daycare center facility that provides services for all children. Children who are able to experience quality early education and child care receive long-term benefits. They have better math, language, and social skills as they enter school, and, as they grow older, they will require less special education and will progress further in school. The Wanda A. Mikes Early Education Center provides these services for a community that has been hit hard by decades of systemic neglect and more recently by the pandemic.

There will be a good mix of building, painting, and landscaping projects that are all outside to ensure that we will be able to comply with all COVID requirements. The space we are working in will allow us to make sure that the volunteers are all able to stay a safe distance apart. These projects are all being chosen because they will help the school provide quality educational opportunities for its students.

We will provide the tools, the tasks, water, snacks, and lunch! All we ask is that you bring that motivation, dedication, and passion to serve our South Central LA community.

Who We Are

In 2025, Travis Manion Foundation (TMF) acquired The Mission Continues, bringing two best-in-class organizations together to provide more opportunities for veterans to find community, lead, and serve. Guided by the ethos “If Not Me, Then Who…,” veterans continue their service, build connections, and thrive in their post-military lives by serving as character role models to youth. As a result, communities prosper and the character of our nation’s heroes lives on in the next generation. Learn more about TMF at travismanion.org

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.
