Project Paint & Play: MLK Day Detroit

January 20, 2020

08:30 AM - 02:00 PM EST

Detroit Platoon

Event overview

Each year, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by coming together in service. Save the date for our annual celebration of MLK Day of Service by joining us for a volunteer project with the Boys and Girls Club of Southeast Michigan, the community partner for Operation Motown Reimagination. At the Boys & Girls Club, we will be completing a variety of indoor, hands-on projects that support youth health and well-being. Volunteers will construct yard games such as a gaga court, ladder golf, and corn hole, to encourage the club members to stay active throughout the winter months. Other projects to be completed include mural painting, organizing, and Scrub the Club. Join us for an exciting and inspiring day!

What To Wear

Wear clothes that are comfortable and ready to work, and your blue Mission Continues t-shirt. If you don't have one, we will provide one upon check in.

What to Bring

Bring a reusable water bottle! Pro Tip: plan to be hands-free while keeping your belongings close by wearing a fanny pack or a small camping backpack rather than bringing a bag or a purse.

Inclement Weather

While all projects are indoors, we will monitor road conditions in the event of severe weather. At times, the Boys and Girls Club will close if it is extremely cold since many of the youth walk to the club. Stay alert to your email for updates.

Who We Are

The Mission Continues is a national non-profit that empowers veterans to continue serving in our nation’s under-resourced communities, giving veterans the opportunity to keep serving even after the uniform comes off, right here at home. Our programs deploy veterans and volunteers to work alongside nonprofit partners and community leaders to improve educational resources, tackle food insecurity, foster neighborhood identity, and more.

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.

What is a Service Platoon?

Service Platoons are your opportunity to engage and connect with veterans and community members while generating community impact in a real and tangible way. Led by veteran volunteer platoon leaders, each platoon works with dedicated community partners and volunteers to provide the manpower and support that they need to help them do their work more effectively.

We currently have service platoons in more than 40+ cities across the country that are having events at least once a month. Everyone is invited to serve, regardless of veteran status: a service platoon is for you if you have a passion for service.
