Glen Hazel Community Garden Shed Build

June 08, 2019

10:00 AM - 04:00 PM EDT

Pittsburgh Platoon

Event overview

Come on out and join Pittsburghs Hazelwood Platoon and our partners, The Hazelwood Initiative and the Hazelwood Urban Agriculture Team, as we build a shed for the Glen Hazel Community Garden. The value of a community garden to any given neighborhood is well-researched and well-documented. Food security and nutritional sovereignty, greater connection to nature, the benefits of light physical exercise, improved community cohesion, and reduced crime rates are just a few of the benefits that a community garden brings to a neighborhood. Glen Hazel, in particular, stands to benefit due to the fact that this district of Hazelwood is entirely Section 8 federal housing, therefore residents do not own their homes or the land where they live and need a resource such as this to provide these benefits listed above. The building of this shed will provide a place for storing and securing a set of tools to which anyone wishing to use this garden can have access. This is a key element towards establishing a fully functional garden resource. In addition, we anticipate further benefits specific to this shed by providing a means to collect rainwater for crop irrigation. Currently the site is not directly served by city water supply.

What To Wear

Wear your blue TMC t-shirts, long pants, and close-toed shoes. This is an outdoor event where we will be building a shed and possibly digging in dirt to finally place the shed on level ground. Please wear clothing you won't mind getting dirty and bring wet weather gear in case we get rain.

What to Bring

Bring a positive attitude and desire to help your neighbors in Hazelwood.

Inclement Weather

Event will happen, rain or shine. Please dress appropriately for weather. If, for some reason we get rain, we will have a tent area setup to cut lumber, but we will be putting the shed together in the rain.

Who We Are

The Mission Continues is a national non-profit that empowers veterans to continue serving in our nation’s under-resourced communities, giving veterans the opportunity to keep serving even after the uniform comes off, right here at home. Our programs deploy veterans and volunteers to work alongside nonprofit partners and community leaders to improve educational resources, tackle food insecurity, foster neighborhood identity, and more.

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.

What is a Service Platoon?

Service Platoons are your opportunity to engage and connect with veterans and community members while generating community impact in a real and tangible way. Led by veteran volunteer platoon leaders, each platoon works with dedicated community partners and volunteers to provide the manpower and support that they need to help them do their work more effectively.

We currently have service platoons in more than 40+ cities across the country that are having events at least once a month. Everyone is invited to serve, regardless of veteran status: a service platoon is for you if you have a passion for service.
