99th St Elementary School: Service Day 4

June 26, 2018

09:00 AM - 04:00 PM PDT

Los Angeles Platoon

Event overview

Where We’re Serving
Home of the Eagles, 99th Street Elementary school is located in Watts and is led by Principal Courtney Sawyer. The school, which opened in 1925, has developed strong partnerships with the community and enjoys active parent involvement. 99th Street strives to provide an outstanding Kindergarten through 5th grade learning environment for its approximately 600 students. Student achievement continues to improve at the school each year, evidenced by an 11% increase in the 2016-17 school year in students meeting or exceeding standards on the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) test in English Language Arts and an 8% increase for students meeting and exceeding the standards in mathematics.
Why We’re Serving
99th Street Elementary School entered the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools in 2008 as one of their original 10 schools. Since joining the Partnership, the school has seen an influx of returning students and community engagement. This day of service will further the ongoing efforts by the school to foster a connection with students and their families. Community members will be supported by creating new spaces for parents to gather and youth to play.
What We’ll Be Doing
Connect - Giving the Parent Center a makeover with new storage and furniture to support family engagement. Revitalize - Redoing outdoor play areas including painting the four square courts and updating the softball field to accommodate soccer and other field sports. Transform - Repurposing the old garden space into an outdoor classroom, complete with a quiet reading corner and new garden beds. We're excited to be joined by volunteers from our partners at CarMax for this day of service.

Who We Are

In 2025, Travis Manion Foundation (TMF) acquired The Mission Continues, bringing two best-in-class organizations together to provide more opportunities for veterans to find community, lead, and serve. Guided by the ethos “If Not Me, Then Who…,” veterans continue their service, build connections, and thrive in their post-military lives by serving as character role models to youth. As a result, communities prosper and the character of our nation’s heroes lives on in the next generation. Learn more about TMF at travismanion.org

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.
