MY connection to 9/11
  • I was serving in the military on 9/11

Where were you when you first heard about or saw the 9/11 terrorist attacks?

I was on-duty as Mission Director for Charlie Crew in the Command Center at Cheyenne Mountain. We began our shift at 0600 MDT. At 0646 MDT, the first airliner struck North Tower. This began my crowded hour and the longest day of 28 years of active duty.

How did the events of that day shape your life and inspire your service to this country?

Honestly, I thought, in a few minutes of quiet of that day, that this must have been what it was like for the military members at Pearl Harbor. You quickly come to the realization that we are a war. All the the things that you did in those innumerable, boring training sessions are going to be put to use. 9/11 led to volunteer for an assignment in the Middle East which I served in 2007. As a wonderful capstone to my career, Osama bin Laden received his just reward the day after my retirement ceremony in 2011.

What are you excited to contribute to your community, however you define it, for the next 20 years?

I plan to help and honor the veterans in my local area. I am currently working on erecting a Veterans Memorial to honor the men and women in our town who have served in the United States military.
