MY connection to 9/11
  • I was living in New York City or Washington, DC on 9/11

Where were you when you first heard about or saw the 9/11 terrorist attacks?

I was out sick and walking to the doctor's office, when my son Patrick (deceased 6/12/07) called me to tell me to report to work. At the time I worked for the NYPD Intelligence Division, but was out sick due to having Vertigo. The next phone call I received, was from the brother of a detective, that I had been taking care of, who was dying of Brain Cancer. His brother wanted to tell me that his brother had died at 0550 hours that morning. So, I always believe that he was the angel, who led those who died on that day to heaven. Will never forget him or his family. his name was Detective Dave Wallace. Finally when I did go back to work with information from my doctor and also prior info about an experience I had at 2 WTC in August. Was asked to work at Ground Zero, but because I had just gotten over being sick, I did not go there. But worked security at the Brooklyn Army Terminal at the Intelligence Division. It was an interesting time, when everyone pulled together to support and help each other. The NYPD were heroes, then, now sadly people have forgotten, only almost 20 years later, what and who were there that day. My vow is to never forget "my angel Dave Wallace and the other friends and family members, I have lost due to 9/1//01.

How did the events of that day shape your life and inspire your service to this country?

It only made me want to help secure the country and keep the U.S.A. safe. I have worked for the NYPD for 48 years and because of how we all pulled together that day. Makes me feel proud to say I am a civilian member.

What are you excited to contribute to your community, however you define it, for the next 20 years?

The ability to help train and enlighten others in regards to staying supportive.
