We Didn't Start the Fire! We Stopped It!

July 29, 2017

08:45 AM - 05:00 PM EDT

New York City Platoon

Event overview

Harlem Platoon didn't start the fire! It's gonna stop it by installing fire alarms! Every day, 7 people die in home fires that lack working smoke alarms - children and the elderly disproportionately so. That’s why the Harlem Platoon is partnering with the Red Cross to help with their the Home Fire Campaign! The Home Fire Campaign provides free smoke alarms and installation, as well as fire safety education in underserved communities to help protect them from this common hazard. We will be going to the homes in Flushing, Queens and to help with fire alarm installations along with giving fire safety. This is a wonderful way to make an instant and tangible difference in the community, meet a ton of interesting people, and save lives! Last week alone, a woman reported that a smoke detector that the Red Cross had installed on June 9th warned her of a fire that would have killed her. The meetup point will be P.S. 13Q (55-01 94th St, Flushing, NY 11373). From there we will get our brief training, break into teams, and get to work! Lunch will be provided by the Red Cross. This is an all day event. If you can only do a certain amount of time please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate. :-) PUBLIC TRANSIT INFO: Train Transportation to Woodhaven Blvd Station (R Train) go North up 92nd street and make a right at 56 Ave. Map

Who We Are

In 2025, Travis Manion Foundation (TMF) acquired The Mission Continues, bringing two best-in-class organizations together to provide more opportunities for veterans to find community, lead, and serve. Guided by the ethos “If Not Me, Then Who…,” veterans continue their service, build connections, and thrive in their post-military lives by serving as character role models to youth. As a result, communities prosper and the character of our nation’s heroes lives on in the next generation. Learn more about TMF at travismanion.org

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.
