Stand and Remember 9/11 at the Greenwood Cemetery - September 2024

September 14, 2024

09:00 AM - 01:00 PM CDT

St. Louis Platoon

Event overview

Join The Mission Continues, a Veteran Nonprofit, for a day of service in honor of our United In Service: Honoring 9/11 campaign. This event is dedicated to benefiting Greenwood Historic Cemetery, a site of immense cultural and historical significance.

Established in 1874, Greenwood Cemetery spans 31.85 acres and is the final resting place for approximately 50,000 individuals, with around 6,000 marked headstones. Though it was active until 1993, the cemetery remains a vital link to the past, having been added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

Our efforts will focus on improving the conditions of the grave sites and adding gravel to the access road, helping to preserve the legacy of those interred here. Historic Black cemeteries like Greenwood are crucial for maintaining the rich history and culture of Black communities. These sacred spaces honor the lives of generations who lived through significant periods of American history. By protecting and restoring this cemetery, we pay respect to those buried here and ensure that their stories and contributions are not forgotten.

This project is conducted in partnership with the Greenwood Cemetery Preservation Association, Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to maintaining this historic site.

Your participation in this event is an opportunity to honor the past, promote social justice, and contribute to the ongoing effort to preserve the history and dignity of this important community landmark.

Who We Are

In 2025, Travis Manion Foundation (TMF) acquired The Mission Continues, bringing two best-in-class organizations together to provide more opportunities for veterans to find community, lead, and serve. Guided by the ethos “If Not Me, Then Who…,” veterans continue their service, build connections, and thrive in their post-military lives by serving as character role models to youth. As a result, communities prosper and the character of our nation’s heroes lives on in the next generation. Learn more about TMF at travismanion.org

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.
