Osborn Playground Veteran's Day Service Project

November 12, 2016

10:00 AM - 02:00 PM EST

National Events Platoon

Event overview

Located in Brownsville, Brooklyn behind PS 275, Osborn Playground has been an instrumental community hub since 1988. Surrounded by wrought iron fencing, the playground contains a comfort station, a large compass stone, basketball courts, aqua and red play equipment with safety surfacing, tot swings, a shower basin, and spring riding animals. Due to decreasing investments in city parks, Osborn Playground will not be receiving funding from NYC Parks to help the playground remain a safe place for local children and residents to play and remain active. On this day of service, veterans and supporters will refurbish the park’s iron fencing and two playground sets, refresh the paint on the basketball courts and shower basin, paint a new softball field, blacktop games and mural on the playground’s comfort station and remove invasive plant species so we can plant 1,000 daffodils. This service project is part of an ongoing collaboration between The Mission Continues, Partnerships for Parks, New York City Parks, and Community Solutions – Brownsville Initiative designed to improve the neighborhood. Through this day of service, platoon members will show the community that veterans are leaving a legacy of action and service that will forever change Brownsville.

Who We Are

The Mission Continues is a national non-profit that empowers veterans to continue serving in our nation’s under-resourced communities, giving veterans the opportunity to keep serving even after the uniform comes off, right here at home. Our programs deploy veterans and volunteers to work alongside nonprofit partners and community leaders to improve educational resources, tackle food insecurity, foster neighborhood identity, and more.

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.

What is a Service Platoon?

Service Platoons are your opportunity to engage and connect with veterans and community members while generating community impact in a real and tangible way. Led by veteran volunteer platoon leaders, each platoon works with dedicated community partners and volunteers to provide the manpower and support that they need to help them do their work more effectively.

We currently have service platoons in more than 40+ cities across the country that are having events at least once a month. Everyone is invited to serve, regardless of veteran status: a service platoon is for you if you have a passion for service.
