Event overview

Join NOLA 1st Platoon for our MLK Jr. Day of Service event in partnership with Sankofa. We are very excited to be working with Sankofa and supporting them in the amazing work that they do in our great city. The Sankofa Wetland Park, located at 6401 Florida Ave. in New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward neighborhood was developed by Sankofa Community Development Corporation in partnership with Sewerage and Water Board and City of New Orleans. Sankofa worked with a team of wetland ecologists and landscape architects to transform this area into a space for environmental education, relaxation, and recreation for all to enjoy. Over 300 Bald cypress and 200 Herbaceous trees have been installed with 81,929 gallons of water flowing into the wetland area. Over 400 invasive Chinese Tallow trees were removed from the site. To learn more about Sankofa visit their website at http://sankofanola.org/ We will be doing light construction and area beautification. No experience is necessary. We will have professionals on hand to guide you every step of the project. Children are welcome at this event. As always, lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Who We Are

In 2025, Travis Manion Foundation (TMF) acquired The Mission Continues, bringing two best-in-class organizations together to provide more opportunities for veterans to find community, lead, and serve. Guided by the ethos “If Not Me, Then Who…,” veterans continue their service, build connections, and thrive in their post-military lives by serving as character role models to youth. As a result, communities prosper and the character of our nation’s heroes lives on in the next generation. Learn more about TMF at travismanion.org

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.
