9.11 Day of Service 2015 - New York City

September 11, 2015

08:00 AM - 05:00 PM EDT

New York City Platoon

Event overview

As the nation observes the anniversary of September 11, hundreds of New York City-based post-9/11 veterans are preparing to serve their country in a new way: by participating in community service projects on the home front. The veterans are part of The Mission Continues, a national nonprofit organization that has empowered thousands of veterans to serve their country in new ways as a means for a successful reintegration to civilian life. Fort Wadsworth Service Project (Sept. 11-12) – More than 100 local veterans, community volunteers, military families and key corporate partners – including Benjamin Moore, Guggenheim and Disney – will join forces for a two-day, all-hands service project at Fort Wadsworth. Home to some of the most spectacular views of New York Harbor, Fort Wadsworth remains closed to the general public due to years of deterioration that have jeopardized the site’s safety. To help restore Fort Wadsworth, volunteers will work side-by-side to remove trash and debris and refurbish the grounds. The event is part of an ongoing collaboration between The Mission Continues and the National Parks Service. The partnership is designed to improve public access to the history and natural beauty of Gateway National Recreation Area, where Fort Wadsworth is located.
