Where We’re Serving
Join us for a day of service on Saturday, June 10th at Mattie Freeland Park! Mattie Freeland was a longtime resident of English Avenue in Atlanta. In a neighborhood that suffered greatly during and after the crack epidemic of the 80’s with violent crime and blight, Mattie was a fixture of positivity and love. Mattie was considered to be a grandmother to all in her community, and was known for having a couch or a meal for anyone in need. While she lived, Mattie envisioned a peaceful and beautiful gathering place in her neighborhood. After her death in 2008 at age 93, the community rallied to create Mattie Freeland Park.
What We’ll Be Doing
Building off of the community’s visioning documents for Mattie Freeland Park, our veteran and local volunteers will be bringing many of the neighbors’ park dreams to life. From a cookout area to play equipment and an outdoor shed, we will help the neighbors to transform their park into a more usable and beautiful space in honor of Ms. Mattie and her legacy.
The Activities
There’s a purpose behind each project at Mattie Freeland Park. Check out the various activities taking place throughout the day: Let’s socialize - Create a picnic area for local gatherings including tables and a community grill. Let’s play - Install a horseshoe pit and a new basketball court complete with bench seating. Let’s beautify - Lay new sod, landscape low lush plants and evergreens throughout the grounds, and install bamboo fencing for some curb appeal. Let’s build - Pergola’s, picnic tables, benches, and concrete seating all need to be built and nestled throughout the park. Let’s demo - Demolish an old shed and tear out the fencing to make way for new play spaces and updated materials.
The Service Impact
Our day of service at Mattie Freeland Park is an opportunity to contribute to the English Avenue community and Mattie’s life work. Participants and community volunteers will kick off this partnership through a day of service projects. But the work and partnership will continue on after Operation Westside Surge is over through the efforts of our local Atlanta Service Platoons and fellows. We appreciate your support and your time. Volunteers are welcome to work for all or a portion of the project day.
