Veteran's Day Service Project

November 12, 2016

Houston Platoon

Event overview

L and S Small World Academy is one of the few early childhood education centers in the Independence Heights community. With more than 150 kids, the childcare center sits on an acre of land in the northwest portion of the neighborhood. Our focus is to upgrade the center so that children are educationally prepared to thrive at local elementary schools like Buruss Elementary which is also one of our operational sites. Volunteers are needed to help build a community garden onsite that will help kids learn about nature and urban agriculture. The garden will also have an outdoor classroom, compost area, tool shed, natural playground, signage and more. The garden will be open to the larger community on specified days providing fresh produce to increase healthy living in this medically under-served community. We also have plans to build a library and provide age appropriate books that will aide in reading fundamentals. Lunch will also be provided. We look forward to honoring our veterans, serving the community and making a great impact. Hope to see you out there!
