Event overview

Over the last five decades, the Osborn community of northeast Detroit has experienced severe (nearly 50 percent) population loss. This significant decline has presented unique challenges for residents. For several years running, the 48205 zip code (where Osborn sits) was the most violent zip code in the country—and unfortunately Osborn is reported to have more residents under the age of 18 than any other neighborhood in the city. The population loss Osborn experienced has resulted in increased vandalized structures, loss of commercial activity, and a growing concentration of poverty and crime among residents. However, these challenges are not uniformly spread throughout the neighborhood, leaving hope for the many Detroiters who call Osborn home. Desired outcome: Beautify three neighborhood parks and create a safe, lively space for children and families in the community to gather and play. Objectives for the Project(s): • Beland Manning Park o Paint ballards around the park o Repair the playground’s plastic border and replenish wood chips in playground area o Tear down baseball field’s metal fence to convert field into a football space o Build benches (6) to place around the park for the community to use and enjoy o Refurbish and refresh a gravel pathway • Josefiak Park o Replace the metal poles/fence with wooden ballards and paint o Repair playground plastic border, playground area, add picnic tables, replenish wood chips in the play area (3) • Calimera Park o Removal of the bent or broken metal fences on both North and South entry ways and replace missing fencing with wood ballards o Build benches (9) for additional seating around the park o Replenish playground area with wooden chips o Repair areas to the siding of the park’s edible hut (the city’s first and only Edible Hut structure) o Remove unsafe backstop (fence) from baseball field o Build benches for additional seating in the park (5)
