The Mission Continues and Fields 4 Valor are teaming up to provide “Victory Gardens” in 2021 to Veterans and Veterans care givers around the NCR. Fields 4 Valor have been growing seedlings for Victory Gardens since 2018. In 2019 with COVID and the growing need for fresh vegetables and fruits in our communities F4V started providing the seedlings for free. In 2021 F4V will grow the seedlings and provide volunteers with plants to start their own Victory Garden further serving the veteran community with a goal of donating about 8,000 seedlings. They are seeking to provide 150 Victory Garden sets with roughly 55 seedlings each. Each set will fill up a 12’ x 12’ home garden. If you are interested in receiving a Victory Garden kit please sign up no later than 15 Feb Jan 2021 and provide a projected date you will plant your Victory Garden. The dates will allow F4V time to grow the plants for your garden. Pick up arrangements will be made by F4V directly at a later time. “Victory Gardens”, also called “War Gardens” or “Food Gardens for Defense”, were vegetable, fruit, and herb gardens planted at private residences and public parks in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Germany during World War I and World War II. In wartime, governments encouraged people to plant victory gardens not only to supplement their rations but also to boost morale. They were used along with Rationing Stamps and Cards to reduce pressure on the public food supply. Besides indirectly aiding the war effort, these gardens were also considered a civil "morale booster" in that gardeners could feel empowered by their contribution of labor and rewarded by the produce grown. This made Victory Gardens a part of daily life on the home front.
