Where We’re Serving
For day one of our five project days, we’re taking to the streets, the Great Streets! Located in the center of Watts, 103rd Street and its surrounding areas were once an urban center of commerce and community. The 1965 Watts Riots left 103rd Street in ruins with piles of bricks and ashes, earning the corridor the nickname “Charcoal Alley.” Although renovations have since been made, the corner markets, shops, and cafes never returned to 103rd Street. Today, the area encompassing 103rd Street, Wilmington Ave, 104th Street and Graham Ave is part of Mayor Eric Garcetti’s Great Streets Initiative, a program that aims to re-imagine neighborhood centers by activating streets as public spaces.
Why We’re Serving
We’re joining in the effort to help restore and revitalize these streets. Together with our project partners, community members and local sponsors we will kick-off the first day of our Mass Deployment on the block. With its central location in the Watts community, the day at Great Streets will set the tone for the coming week’s service projects. This day of service will provide beautification of a shared local space for passersby to see and enjoy.
What We’ll Be Doing
