Mobile Market Build: Supporting Schoolchildren Displaced by Hurricane Maria

November 11, 2017

10:00 AM - 02:00 PM EST

Orlando Platoon

Event overview

On Veteran’s Day, Saturday Nov 11th, members of The Mission Continues 1st and 2nd Platoons will bring together volunteers from Disney, Second Harvest Food Bank, and HBI for an exceptionally meaningful and high impact project serving vulnerable Central Florida communities affected by Hurricane Maria. Thousands of Puerto Rican families are currently expected to be seeking semi/permanent refuge in and around Orlando, resulting in an large influx of new students joining area schools. To accommodate these new students, rooms previously used for emergency food storage space will need to be turned into classrooms. In response to this need in our community, the Veterans Day service project this year will be building ‘Mobile Pantry Units.’ TMC veterans and volunteers will be building these units, which will be donated to select Orange County Schools, where in partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank, they will be able to provide food for our new Puerto Rican brothers and sisters. This will be an excellent opportunity for you to 'live your values', get to know your new Platoon Leaders, enjoy camaraderie with your fellow members and make a real difference in your community. This is a family fun day! There will be catered food, live music, and Disney is taking the lead on youth activities!
